Weddings

If you are considering marriage then you will find the information on this page useful to you. First of all, we are delighted that you should be considering marriage and we rejoice at the love you have found for each other.

We believe marriage should be a thing of beauty, blessed by God and fulfilling to both husband and wife. It is important not to rush into marriage and to think carefully about the promises that you will make to each other.

Remember that the wedding day, no matter how big and exciting, is not nearly as important as what follows - your married life together. In the Church we believe marriage to be a binding commitment for the rest of your life and we encourage everyone to set out on their marriage plans with this firmly in mind.

Please download the following booklet which contains all the information you need to know about getting married at St Andrew's Parish Church.

Online Wedding Booklet  (it may take a minute to download and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)

Prior to your wedding and the beginning of your married life together you will be asked to participate in a short course in which common issues relating to marriage are explored.

Some of the questions you may have are answered in the column on the right. If you have any other questions then please contact Peter, our minister, who will be happy to talk to you. You can do this using the contact form or you will find contact details on the Contact Information page.

Congratulations again on your decision to make a commitment to one another.

Marriage Matters at 2-in-2-1

What age do I have to be before I can get married?

You must be at least 16 years old, as must be the witnesses.

Do I have to be a member of the church?

No, this is not a requirement. In the wedding ceremony you are not asked to make vows directly to God, but you do make vows to each other in the presence of God. That means that the vows are not to be taken lightly. Marriage is a serious commitment.

Who will the minister marry?

No one, as he is happily married already!!

However, he will happily lead the marriage ceremony of anyone who lives within the parish boundary and those with a connection to it.

I am divorced, can I still get married?

Divorce is not a barrier to getting remarried in itself but a Church of Scotland minister has discretion over remarrying when the former spouse is still living so he will want to talk to you about it before going ahead.

Can we get married anywhere?

In Scotland it is possible to be married in any location but this required the services of a minister. The law has recently changed to allow registrars to conduct weddings in other locations also.

Peter, our minister, always prefers to conduct weddings in the church, but depending on circumstances is willing to consider other venues.
